How to Order a
Custom Prom Dress
in Detroit.
The Bellz Couture Process.
You've decided you're not walking into prom in something off a rack. Good. Here's exactly what happens next — from your first inquiry all the way to the moment you put it on.
A custom prom dress isn't a purchase, it's a collaboration. And when you get it right, you don't just look different. You feel different. You move different.
Every year, Detroit girls trust Bellz Couture to create the dress they've been envisioning; the gown nobody else is wearing - no copying designs - built around their body, their vision, their moment. If you've never ordered a custom dress before, the process might feel uncertain. This post breaks it down completely, so you know exactly what to expect at every step.
First Move
Start With Your Inspiration.
Before anything else — before you fill out a form, before you book a consultation, before you even know what fabric you want — start collecting inspiration. Screenshots from Instagram. Pinterest saves. TikTok videos. Dresses you loved but couldn't find in your size or color. Silhouettes that make you stop scrolling.
You don't need to have it all figured out. That's what the consultation is for. But the more visual references you bring, the closer your final dress will be to the one living in your head.
Save photos of what you don't like, too. Showing a designer "not this neckline" or "not this silhouette" is just as useful as showing them what you love. It narrows the vision fast.
The Most Important Step
Submit Your Inquiry.
The first official step is filling out the Custom Order Inquiry form on bellzcouture.net. This is where you share your vision, your event date, your general size range, and any specific details about the look you want.
This matters more than most people realize. Your event date determines everything. Custom gowns at Bellz Couture require 4-6 weeks minimum. Rush orders are possible — but they need to be communicated before you place any deposit, not after, as a rush fee may be applied.
If your prom is in April or May, you should be submitting your inquiry no later than late November, early December. The earlier you move, the more time there is for fittings, adjustments, and getting every detail right. Spots are limited every season — and they fill.
Know Your Window
Understanding the Timeline.
One of the most common questions is: how far in advance do I need to start? The honest answer is: sooner than you think. Here's how the Bellz Couture timeline typically works for a custom prom gown:
For semi-custom gowns, where you choose your fabric, bodice color, and silhouette from existing designs, the timeline is the same. The difference is that the design phase is already done. You're personalizing, not starting from scratch.
Rush orders (under 4 weeks) are sometimes available. Email info@bellzcouture.net before booking to confirm availability. Do not place a deposit and then ask about rush — that creates complications for everyone.
Where the Magic Happens
The Consultation.
The consultation is where your dress stops being an idea and starts becoming real. This is a dedicated virtual session, where you bring your inspiration photos, talk through your vision, get measured, and choose your fabrics and colors.
At Bellz Couture, consultations are intentionally kept intimate. This isn't a showroom with 50 girls and a timer. It's your time. Come with your questions, your Pinterest board, and an open mind — sometimes the vision evolves in the room, and the result is better than what you originally planned.
Inspiration photos — at least 3–5 saved or screenshot
Your event date — confirmed, not estimated
Your tape measure — be ready to take measurements (bust, waist, hips, etc.)
Your budget range — being honest here saves time and gets you a better result
A parent or guardian — required if you're under 18, no exceptions
After your consultation, your deposit locks in your spot and starts the build. No deposit, no start date. This is how Bellz Couture protects your order.
The Details That Define It
Choosing Your Fabric.
Fabric is the decision that changes everything. The same silhouette in velvet, sequin, or satin looks like three completely different dresses, and photographs completely differently, too. Here's a quick breakdown of the fabrics available at Bellz Couture:
For semi-custom orders, fabric selections also include stretch velvet and stretch velvet sequin — both of which offer the added benefit of a more forgiving fit throughout the night.
The Build
While Your Dress Comes to Life.
Once your deposit is placed and your details are locked in, the build begins. During the 4-6 week production window, you'll receive updates, not photos, as your gown progresses. This isn't a factory. Every piece is constructed with intention, and the timeline reflects that.
What you should do during this period:
- Secure your shoes early. The heel height you wear affects the hem length — your dress needs to be finished with your actual shoes in mind.
- Don't significantly change your measurements. Your gown is being built to the measurements taken at the consultation. Major changes after the fact affect fit.
- Respond to messages promptly. If your designer needs to confirm a detail, a slow response can delay your timeline.
- Do not request design changes after production starts. Changes mid-build can affect both the timeline and the total cost.
The Moment You've Been Waiting For
Pickup & Final Fitting.
When your gown is complete, it's time for your final fitting. This is where you see the full finished piece for the first time, try it on, and confirm the fit. Minor adjustments can be made at this stage.
Come to your final fitting dressed the way you'll be dressed for prom. That means the right undergarments, your actual shoes, and hair up or down the way you're planning to wear it. Every detail affects how the dress sits on your body — and this is your last chance to catch anything before the big night.
The remaining balance is due before or at pickup. Afterpay is available — 4 payments of equal installments. Payment plans (deposit + remaining balance) are also offered. No gown is released without full payment. This is standard practice across all custom fashion so plan accordingly.
Custom fashion in Detroit is alive — and Bellz Couture is proof of that. If you're ready to start, the inquiry form is open. If you have questions first, email info@bellzcouture.net. Prom 2026 spots are limited, and they do fill — especially in the final 8 weeks before the season peaks.
Don't wait until everyone else has already booked. The girl who moves first is the girl who walks in knowing nobody else is wearing what she's wearing. Be that girl.
